The government in Lithuania has managed to prove the political will and to implement severe fiscal consolidation over the last three years. This has been hard on people but helped to maintain financial stability and integrity of the country and ensured quick rebound of the economy after the crisis, said Mykolas Majauskas, chief economic advisor to the Prime Minister of the Republic of Lithuania in the interview broadcasted on Bloomberg Television.
“I think what we are seeing and what is driving the markets mad is not the budget deficit but it’s the deficit of political will and execution. The quick execution of the fiscal consolidation is what is needed,” he said.
Commenting on Lithuania’s success in going through the difficulties of the crisis, Majauskas said that the government had managed to reach an agreement with all social partners by bringing them to the table.
“We agreed with all of them on tax increases, salary and pension cuts, and all the fiscal consolidation that was needed to maintain financial stability. That’s been done very successfully and allowed for businesses to invest, consumer confidence to rebound, attract foreign direct investment and avoid assistance from the IMF,” he said.
