The regional office will run Hitachi’s business development in Lithuania and the Baltic states with plans to widen its focus across the Nordic countries in the future.
Responding to the announcement, Lithuania’s Prime Minister, Andrius Kubilius, said: “Lithuania could reap multiple benefits from such an investment and the implementation of such a project [the nuclear power plant]. Japanese banks have made it clear that they are interested in financing similar Japanese companies and it is likely that more of them may set up in Lithuania following Hitachi‘s successful launch here. Our membership of the European Union and the Single Market makes Lithuania attractive to Japanese enterprise, meaning we could have more jobs and a better outlook in today‘s global economy.”
Hitachi was introduced to business opportunities in Lithuania by the country’s inward investment agency, Invest Lithuania, in 2011. The company’s representatives were given advice on the establishment of a regional services, distribution and technology centre as well as manufacturing plants in the Baltic states, Scandinavia and other EU countries.
Hitachi offers a broad range of IT systems and products as well as power generating equipment – including nuclear reactors – industrial and construction machinery and installations, electric trains and systems, installation components, consumer appliances and electronics.
