Ireland budget carrier Ryanair is planning to set up an aircraft maintenance, repair and operations (MRO) unit in Kaunas Airport to support its Boeing 737-800 fleet maintenance requirements.

The letter of intent was today signed by Ryanair’s Director of Engineering Michael Hickey and Lithuania’s Minister of Economy Rimantas Žylius.

Ryanair intends to hire up to 60 specialists, and investment of EUR 3.5 million is planned into the 3500 m² facility in Kaunas airport.

Hickey told that Kaunas Airport had appeared more attractive than many other airports in Europe in terms of business expansion and investment. Minister Žylius noted that Ryanair made the decision after a careful examination of the market conditions and local competencies was carried out with assistance of Invest Lithuania.

Ryanair’s other two MRO centers are based in the UK and Germany.

Ryanair launched its flights from Kaunas Airport back in May 2010. Not long after that, Ryanair also started operating flights from Vilnius International Airport
