Sound economic performance indicators in 2013 are expected to shine a positive light on Lithuania’s economic development in the EU context.
The autumn 2012 EU economic forecast predicts Eurozone growth of 0.1% for 2013, with overall EU growth reaching 0.4%. Meanwhile, Lithuania should boast a growth rate of 3.0% in the coming year, which will put the country among the top 3 fastest growing countries in the EU.
“Economic growth in the Baltic States sends positive signals. Development here is more dynamic than elsewhere in the Eurozone”, claims Maximilian Butek, Deputy CEO of the German-Baltic Chamber of Commerce.
According to the European Commission, while economic activity in the EU-17 declined by 0.4% and the EU as a whole by 0.3% in 2012, at the close of the year the Lithuanian Ministry of Finance had to revise its earlier forecasts and raise the GDP growth bar to 3.5% for 2012.
“In light of its strong prospects for economic growth, Lithuania should expect further investments from strategic partner countries in Europe,” says Milda Darguzaite, the Managing Director of Invest Lithuania.
A consistent stream of foreign trade and exports supports stable growth in Lithuania. Exports of goods and services grew by 10.6% in 2012. Strong economic performance helps the state to comply with the Maastricht criteria of keeping the state budget deficit ratio under 3.0% of GDP.
