The shuttle train “Saule” departed from the Chinese city of Chongqing 10 days ago, on October 28, and today is arriving to Lithuania.
The 41-container train carrying office equipment will reach Lithuania through Almaty in Kazakhstan and passing via Russia and Belarus, onwards transporting goods to Scandinavian and other European countries via Klaipeda State Seaport.
An agreement on launching the train was reached at the 7th meeting of the Kazakh-Lithuanian intergovernmental commission on trade and economic cooperation held during the official visit of Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaite to Kazakhstan last October. President Dalia Grybauskaitė agreed with Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev to support the project of the shuttle container train “Saule” from Klaipeda to Almaty, extending the route up to China, as a strategic cooperation issue.
"The shuttle train reaching China in a week is a breakthrough in the cargo carriage market. It means not only ensured benefit for the countries' economies within the forthcoming decades, but also the best offer for Europe and China in search for interconnections. This project can also become the drive for economic development of both countries, Lithuania and Kazakhstan, therefore we will support it on the highest level," the President underlined.
At the present moment, the carriage of cargoes from China to Europe by sea takes 40 days which will now be reduced to 10 days upon launching the shuttle container train.
“Saule” is a word common to both languages of Lithuania and Kazakhstan. It means "the sun" in Lithuanian and "ray of the sun" in the Kazakh language.
